Populism as Bridge Between Left and Right

A divided country needs to find common ground to reverse the continued economic decline of most of its citizens, across the political spectrum

"Populism is the genuine "third way" of politics, I concluded, transcending both the "big government" policies of the Left and the "big business" policies of the Right. By decentralizing political and economic power, populism aims to replace top-down with bottom-up politics."

Adrian Kuzminski, Fixing the System: A History of Populism, Ancient and Modern

The 14 Populist Plank Positions

If you agree with most of these positions, you will feel right at home here.

Inspired by: The Young Turks’ Populist Plank , Patriotic Millionaires , represent.us , and the MAHA movement.

1

Patriotic Millionaires "Equal Tax Act"

  • Equalizes tax rates for capital gains and ordinary income over $1 million, ending the preferential treatment of capital over labor while maintaining a benefit for small investors
  • Closes the stepped-up basis loophole, disrupting the "buy, borrow, die" strategy used to minimize or eliminate the tax obligations of the uber-wealthy
2

Patriotic Millionaires "Cost of Living" Tax Cut Act

  • Provides a Cost of Living Exemption (COLE) on federal taxes up to a reasonable threshold for the cost of living for a single adult with no children (~$45,000/year)
  • Shifts responsibility for those revenues from the working class to the millionaire class via a tiered surtax on income over $1 million
3

$15/hr minimum wage with yearly COLA increase

  • 11 states already have a minimum wage of at least $15/hr
5

Paid Family Leave

6

Defense Budget capped at $600B/year + COLA

7

Federal "Public Option" for Healthcare

  • Citizens who choose a private healthcare plan are not obligated to pay extra for a public option plan through their taxes, beyond the general taxes that fund government operations and existing public programs like Medicare or Medicaid.
9

Limit home ownership to residents/vacation users. Ban private equity ownership. (3-year phase-out)

Populism in Context

A Tradition Rooted in Democracy and Shared Prosperity

Practical populism goes back to at least Ancient Athens, starting with Solon's reforms in 594Β BCE. Theoretical populism has been traced back to another ancient Greek, one Phaleas of Chalcedon (circa 450–350Β BCE), by Mark Kuzminski in Fixing the System: A History of Populism, Ancient and Modern .

Populism surged again in the Roman Republic. Historian Michael Parenti documents how Julius Caesar's land reforms and debt relief threatened entrenched elites in The Assassination of Julius Caesar: A People's History of Ancient Rome . His efforts showed that challenging concentrated wealth can meet considerable resistance - so best not to go it alone!

Watch Michael Parenti explain how populism in the late Roman Republic challenged entrenched aristocratic power.

Why Now

Populism is Needed as Much as Ever

A U.S. perspective

Political theorist Sheldon Wolin described our current system as "inverted totalitarianism" - corporate power dominates policy, democratic rituals persist, but genuine public influence is minimized.

  • β€’Corporate dominance: Concentrated lobbying and revolving-door influence mean boardrooms often write the laws ordinary people live under.
  • β€’Managed democracy: Campaign spectacles persist, but viable options are narrowed by donor-class priorities and compliant media narratives.
  • β€’Depoliticization: Citizens are nudged toward consumerism and overloaded with information, leaving little time to organize.
  • β€’Indefinite power: Unlike classic totalitarian regimes, this model can run indefinitely through economic entrenchment.
  • β€’Inverted mobilization: Rather than mobilizing the masses, the system works to demobilize and pacify the public.

Political scientists Martin Gilens and Benjamin Page quantified this imbalance in Testing Theories of American Politics , finding that "the preferences of the average American appear to have only a minuscule, near-zero statistical impact on public policy."

Gilens & Page explain how public opinion rarely translates into congressional action without organized pressure.

Addressing the current gross inequity in power amongst citizens requires populist reforms that address both the levers of political power; but also the extreme inequities in wealth distribution.

Future of Work

Is AI Coming for Your Job?

If the answer might be "yes", collective action matters more than ever.

Artificial intelligence can accelerate research, summarize information, and automate repetitive tasks. Even though it is overrated and hyped , it can still make knowledge workers redundant. This very website was produced mostly by AI β€” though under human supervision, correction, and direction.

Without organized populist pressure, AI-driven productivity gains will widen the gap between corporate power and ordinary people. PopulistsUnite.com is a tool to make sure technological change strengthens communities rather than hollowing them out.
