Practical populism goes back to at least Ancient Athens, starting with Solon's reforms in 594 BCE. Theoretical populism has been traced back to another ancient Greek, one Phaleas of Chalcedon (circa 450–350 BCE), by Mark Kuzminski in Fixing the System: A History of Populism, Ancient and Modern .
